The Sorrowful Mysteries

The Sorrowful Mysteries contemplate the Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Through these meditations, we unite our sufferings with Christ's sacrifice and grow in gratitude for His redeeming love.

1

The Agony in the Garden

Fruit: Sorrow for Sin

"In his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground."

Luke 22:44

Meditation

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus experiences the full weight of human fear and sorrow. His prayer 'not my will, but yours be done' teaches us to surrender our anxieties to the Father, trusting in His greater plan.

2

The Scourging at the Pillar

Fruit: Purity

"Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged."

John 19:1

Meditation

Jesus endures brutal scourging at the pillar, His flesh torn for our sins. Each wound speaks of His immense love and the price of our redemption. We are called to mortify our sinful inclinations through this mystery.

3

The Crowning with Thorns

Fruit: Moral Courage

"And after twisting some thorns into a crown, they put it on his head. They put a reed in his right hand and knelt before him and mocked him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!""

Matthew 27:29

Meditation

The soldiers mock the King of Kings with a crown of thorns. This humiliation reminds us that true kingship lies in humble service, and challenges us to reject the pride that separates us from God.

4

The Carrying of the Cross

Fruit: Patience

"And carrying the cross by himself, he went out to what is called The Place of the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha."

John 19:17

Meditation

Bearing the heavy cross through the streets of Jerusalem, Jesus falls yet rises again. His perseverance under suffering inspires us to carry our daily crosses with patience and offer them for the salvation of souls.

5

The Crucifixion

Fruit: Perseverance

"Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit." Having said this, he breathed his last."

Luke 23:46

Meditation

On Calvary, Jesus gives His life for the salvation of the world. At the foot of the cross stands Mary, united with her Son's sacrifice. Here we learn the depth of divine love and the call to die to ourselves.
