The Mysteries

The Rosary is divided into four sets of mysteries, each containing five events from the lives of Jesus and Mary.

joyful Mysteries

Contemplate the joy of the Incarnation and the early life of Jesus. Prayed on Mondays and Saturdays.

  1. 1.

    The Annunciation

    "And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women."

    The Angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she has been chosen to be the Mother of God. Mary humbly accepts God's will with the words, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word." Let us meditate on Mary's perfect humility and openness to God's plan.

    The Visitation

    "And Mary rising up in those days, went into the hill country with haste into a city of Juda. And she entered into the house of Zachary, and saluted Elizabeth."

    Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth, who is also with child. Elizabeth greets Mary with the words, "Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb." Let us contemplate Mary's charitable haste to serve others and share the joy of Christ.

  3. 3.

    The Nativity

    "And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him up in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn."

    Jesus is born in a humble stable in Bethlehem. The King of Kings enters the world in poverty and simplicity. Let us reflect on the virtue of detachment from worldly goods and the richness of spiritual poverty.

  4. 4.

    The Presentation

    "And after the days of her purification, according to the law of Moses, were accomplished, they carried him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord."

    Mary and Joseph present the Child Jesus in the Temple. Simeon recognizes Him as the Messiah and prophesies that a sword shall pierce Mary's heart. Let us meditate on obedience to God's law and acceptance of His will.

  5. 5.

    The Finding in the Temple

    "And it came to pass, that, after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, hearing them, and asking them questions."

    After three days of sorrow, Mary and Joseph find the twelve-year-old Jesus teaching in the Temple. Jesus says, "Did you not know that I must be about my Father's business?" Let us seek Jesus always with perseverance and find joy in His presence.

Meditate on the Passion and Death of Our Lord. Prayed on Tuesdays and Fridays.

  1. 1.

    The Agony in the Garden

    "And being in an agony, he prayed the longer. And his sweat became as drops of blood, trickling down upon the ground."

    Luke 22:43-44 (Douay-Rheims)

    Jesus prays in the Garden of Gethsemane, knowing the suffering that awaits Him. His agony is so great that He sweats blood. He prays, "Father, if thou wilt, remove this chalice from me: but yet not my will, but thine be done." Let us meditate on true contrition for our sins.

  2. 2.

    The Scourging at the Pillar

    "Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him."

    Jesus is bound to a pillar and brutally scourged. He endures this torment silently, offering His suffering for our sins, especially sins against purity. Let us contemplate the price of our redemption and strive for purity of heart and body.

  3. 3.

    The Crowning with Thorns

    "And platting a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand. And bowing the knee before him, they mocked him, saying: Hail, king of the Jews."

    The soldiers crown Jesus with thorns and mock Him as King. Though suffering immense pain and humiliation, Jesus remains silent and dignified. Let us ask for the courage to bear ridicule and suffering for the sake of our faith.

  4. 4.

    The Carrying of the Cross

    "And bearing his own cross, he went forth to that place which is called Calvary, but in Hebrew Golgotha."

    Weakened by the scourging, Jesus carries the heavy cross through the streets of Jerusalem to Calvary. Three times He falls under its weight, yet He continues. Let us meditate on patient endurance of our daily crosses.

  5. 5.

    The Crucifixion

    "And Jesus crying with a loud voice, said: Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit. And saying this, he gave up the ghost."

    Jesus is nailed to the cross and dies after three hours of agony. From the cross, He forgives His executioners and gives us His Mother. Let us contemplate the depth of God's love and pray for the grace of final perseverance.

glorious Mysteries

Celebrate Christ's Resurrection and the glory of Mary. Prayed on Wednesdays and Sundays.

  1. 1.

    The Resurrection

    "He is not here, for he is risen, as he said. Come, and see the place where the Lord was laid."

    On the third day, Jesus rises from the dead in glory. The Resurrection is the foundation of our faith and the promise of our own resurrection. Let us believe firmly in the promises of Christ and live as people of the Resurrection.

  2. 2.

    The Ascension

    "And the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God."

    Forty days after His Resurrection, Jesus ascends into heaven before the eyes of His disciples. He goes to prepare a place for us. Let us set our hearts on heaven and live with hope in eternal life.

  3. 3.

    The Descent of the Holy Spirit

    "And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they began to speak with divers tongues, according as the Holy Ghost gave them to speak."

    The Holy Spirit descends upon Mary and the Apostles in the Upper Room on Pentecost. They receive the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit and are transformed. Let us pray for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

  4. 4.

    The Assumption

    "Arise, make haste, my love, my dove, my beautiful one, and come. For winter is now past, the rain is over and gone."

    At the end of her earthly life, Mary is assumed body and soul into heaven. She who was preserved from sin is preserved from the corruption of the grave. Let us ask Mary to pray for us at the hour of our death.

  5. 5.

    The Coronation

    "And a great sign appeared in heaven: A woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars."

    Mary is crowned Queen of Heaven and Earth. She reigns with her Son and intercedes for all her children. Let us have confidence in Mary's powerful intercession and entrust ourselves to her maternal care.

  1. 1.

    The Baptism in the Jordan

    "And Jesus being baptized, forthwith came out of the water: and lo, the heavens were opened to him: and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him."

    Jesus begins His public ministry by being baptized by John in the Jordan River. The heavens open, the Spirit descends, and the Father's voice proclaims, "This is my beloved Son." Let us renew our baptismal promises and be open to the Holy Spirit.

  2. 2.

    The Wedding at Cana

    "His mother saith to the waiters: Whatsoever he shall say to you, do it."

    At Mary's request, Jesus performs His first miracle, changing water into wine. Mary tells the servants, "Whatsoever he shall say to you, do it." Let us follow Mary's example and direction, trusting in her intercession.

  3. 3.

    The Proclamation of the Kingdom

    "The time is accomplished, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent, and believe the gospel."

    Jesus proclaims the Kingdom of God and calls all to conversion. He teaches in parables, heals the sick, and forgives sins. Let us hear His call to repentance and live as citizens of His Kingdom.

  4. 4.

    The Transfiguration

    "And his face did shine as the sun: and his garments became white as snow."

    Matthew 17:2 (Douay-Rheims)

    On Mount Tabor, Jesus reveals His divine glory to Peter, James, and John. His face shines like the sun and His garments become dazzling white. Let us seek transformation in Christ and desire the holiness to which we are called.

  5. 5.

    The Institution of the Eucharist

    "And whilst they were at supper, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke: and gave to his disciples, and said: Take ye, and eat. This is my body."

    At the Last Supper, Jesus institutes the Holy Eucharist, giving us His Body and Blood. "Do this in remembrance of me." Let us adore Christ in the Blessed Sacrament and receive Him worthily in Holy Communion.
